During the first 23 years of my coaching career our teams always ran I-formation and spread sets on offense and were very successful. In 2000, we put in the Delaware Wing-T system. As a head coach, I spent a tremendous amount of time attending Wing-T Clinics and watching available Wing-T videos. I thought it would be a simple offense to teach my players and assistant coaches. It wasn't! While we have made the playoffs each year running the Wing-T offense, I really felt that using all the tag terms for plays was still difficult to teach. We basically had different rules for every play and had to memorize the play. It also limited my game planning and adjustments during the game. The 2002 season would be approaching quickly and we only had one starter back on the offense line and none on defense. I knew I had to do something better to streamline our teaching techniques for learning blocking rules. I also wanted more flexibility on offense to make blocking adjustments during the game. In the spring of 2002, I gave each coach, lineman, and running back an "Elite Blocking Rules Video and Workbook" to complete before we went to camp. This included two J.V. quarterbacks that I was moving to the offensive line. I told the players they needed to complete the entire playbook and know all the rules for each position. At first, my line coach and some of the players were upset about changing the way we called our plays and rules for the line blocking. Why change? We were League Champs and placed 3rd in the State Playoffs the year before. After watching the video, doing the workbook, and applying the superior rules, our line coach would never want to switch back! This is the best system for teaching and learning blocking rules I have ever seen, and they would apply to any offense. It is truly the cutting edge!
